The Three Baskets are the Theravada Buddhists’ scriptures; the ‘tripitaka’ suggests that the manuscripts copies of the three types of texts may have been stored in three baskets. The collection survives in the Pali language and is therefore referred to as the Pali canon. The Pali canon;

1. Vinaya Pitaka: Monastic Discipline—rules governing monastic life, and between monks/nuns and lay people

2. Sutta Pitaka: Doctrinal Discourses—grouped into five collections of discourses; the teachings of the Buddha and his close disciples

3. Abhidhamma Pitaka: Higher Teaching—analysis of natural principles that govern mental and physical processes.
